The STC Tokyo Chapter meeting on November 24 in 2004, was an excellent occasion to meet people with the same goal of creating accurate technical information. The attendees were primarily Japanese, but there was a good mix of expatriates from North America and Europe. The room was truly international.
The discussion was conducted in English, as the topic was on International English and the differences between English from different parts of the world. Japanese speakers aided each other in understanding the English and also helped the non-Japanese speakers understand points made in Japanese.
The room was a good size for the amount of attendees and allowed for a comfortable, friendly chat instead of a cold lecture setting. This setup made the presenter and (hopefully) the attendees feel at ease. The further discussion lead to the sharing of ideas for better presenting English documentation to an international audience.
The evening was well spent, as it encouraged networking within the Technical Writing field and built on ideas for international documentation.
